Headquarters of the Carriacou Regatta Committee

Built in the early eighties the “Regatta Jupa” situated in the heart of down town Hillsborough was first built out of used Telephone poles and Coconut branches as a mere rest and meeting area for the Regatta committee (Est. 1965). The building got it's name “The Jupa” from the Coconut branches used as the roof and walls of the building (Jupa also call Hut).

The building served as a main meeting point for persons coming into Hillsborough, those traveling by sea to and from main land Grenada and other Grenadine Islands or those who were just looking for a “Lime”.

In 1985 with the assistance of Backlays Bank PLC. the structure of the Building was changed from a Straw hut to Concrete Walls and Asphalt roofing.

It has proved to be a very important meeting place in Hillsborough, not only serving as the Headquarters for the Carriacou Regatta Committee from where all the activities for the Regatta festival are carried out, but also as a town hall for a number of other events and activities.

As part of the renovations in 1985, a bar and Regatta Office (Secretariat) was set up at the “Jupa”.

In 1999 the “Jupa” suffered severe damages during the passage of tropical Storm Lennie (Sea Serge) and was closed for over a month during which time repairs were carried out.

In 2003, with the assistance of Sissons Paint, members of the committee and the community, the “Jupa” was once again given a new look. In time for the 2003 Regatta festival.

In 2004, again the JUPA suffered severe roof damage as a result of Hurricane IVAN. With the Assistanec of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) the building was completely renovated in time for the 40th anniversary celebrations.

The “Jupa” is, as was back then, still the hub of the Town . So, when visiting Hillsborough whether by Boat or by Bus you're sure to spot the brightest Building in the heart of town. Come in, relax with a drink from our cold Bar or just chill with the cool sea breeze, chat with friends or locals obtain a Regatta Souvenir or learn all about the oldest festival in Carriacou.
